Shelter
Shelter Technologies are where Braves are spawned, and the only way to increase a village's population capacity. They usually consume Food to produce one Brave, and must be occupied by at least one Brave to produce. Shelter Technologies also determine how sturdy all of your structures are against the four main elemental hazards: fire, rain, wind, and snow.

A large, reinforced mud house with space on top for other structures.

The Alkazar Homestead can be built on top of, similar to the Tiwa House, but it is much larger and its top can also be used for farming in addition to just building (provided you have a way to fertilize the soil).

Multiple houses combined allowing for double spawning.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
The Clay Housing Compound, while taking up much more room than most Shelter technologies, spawns two Braves instead of one for each unit of Food provided. This makes it near-essential for villages with limited Food production, or for very quickly ramping your population up.

A basic hut made from Clay that can help get your town growing quickly.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
Clay Huts are a basic Shelter that can be useful to kick-start a town. Because of its Eagerness property, getting a reliable food supply is less of an immediate priority. However, Clay Huts are vulnerable to almost all weather, don't provide very much population, and can't use attachments.
Small House: Adds 2 to the population cap.
Eagerness: First Brave often requires no Food.
No Attachments: This house type doesn't allow for artisan attachments.

Clay Manor
Massive Clay house that boosts attachment production speed.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
Attachments built on the Clay Manor have their production speed boosted 2×, making them ideal for a run intending to use mostly attachments instead of standalone production buildings.
Gargantuan House: Adds 6 to the population cap.
Attachment Boost: All attachments produce twice as fast. |

Tall Clay houses that can be lived in while flooded.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
Unlike all other Clay houses, Clay Spire Houses do not collapse when they flood. (They are still vulnerable to direct rainfall, however.) They have very good weather resistance, so they can safely be chosen in Biomes where rain is less likely.

Round houses that allow Braves to excavate Clay from their surroundings.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
Embedded Homes are unique in that they can be placed inside the wall of a cliff face. If placed in this way, each time a Brave spawns, they carry Clay to the Hearth. This can be very useful for a Clay-based Technology run, even in Biomes where Clay is in ready supply.

A unique single housing structure that can only be built once but consistently produces Braves and can also build canoes.
— Kainga Encyclopedia
The Gosanke Harborhouse is the only Shelter Technology that can only be built once per Challenge. It provides 30 population from the get-go, and enables you to build Canoes right away. (Note, however, that this limits your population to 30 for the entire Challenge—you can't build more than one Harborhouse.) The Harborhouse is a somewhat flexible structure, requiring only a 4×4 footprint despite taking up a 9×9 space visually. Despite its initial appearance (on the water), this 4x4 segment must be on land. Once built, your Thinker gains the Canoe inspiration, letting you build Canoes anywhere on the water without needing to build a Canoe Dock first.
Unlocking the Harborhouse is a little tricky. In order to unlock it, you must:
Spoiler:
- Visit Pebbles or Greenleaf
- Defeat or befriend the nomads living on the Harborhouse that spawns on the map
- Send your Thinker to the Hearth located on the Harborhouse
Note that due to the way that the above process is tracked by the game, it is currently not possible to unlock the Harborhouse using Serrano.

Ringhouses are unique because their placement is limited to only the circle of territory claimed by the Hearth upon being built. Once a ring has been completed, no more Ringhouses can be built. However, this placement limitation can be expanded through Technologies such as the Firetower Hearth, and it is possible to build more houses at other elevations (provided you can access them).
Attachments are built at the rear of a Ringhouse, which can significantly improve space utilization (since attachments can be built outside the territory radius so long as the Structure they're attached to are inside).
